The kit generates up to 350kWh per year, depending on panel orientation and location, carries a 10-year warranty, and connects to a standard UK socket once the BSI product standard is confirmed on 27th August 2026. The micro-inverter holds an IP67 environmental protection rating and monitors output in real time via the TSUN Smart App.
How the 400W kit generates power
The 400W Plug-in Solar Kit converts sunlight into household electricity through three stages: the panel captures photons, the micro-inverter converts DC to AC, and the 230V AC output feeds your home’s circuits. Appliances running during daylight draw from the solar supply before pulling from the grid, cutting grid consumption directly.
Here is how the kit produces its 400W output step by step:
- The 400W panel generates DC electricity: the monocrystalline panel operates at up to 20.7% module efficiency under standard test conditions, converting sunlight into direct current electricity.
- The micro-inverter converts DC to 230V AC: the 400W micro-inverter takes the panel’s DC output and converts it into AC electricity at UK grid frequency, with output current harmonic distortion below 3%.
- Your home consumes solar first, then grid: when your household draws 600W during the day, the 400W kit covers 400W of that demand. The grid supplies only the remaining 200W.
- The grid fills the gap: if the panel produces 350W and your appliances need 500W, the grid supplies the remaining 150W. Your meter records only the grid portion.
Anti-islanding keeps you safe: the micro-inverter shuts down automatically during a power cut, which is mandatory under UK grid connection rules for any plug-in solar kit.
Where the 400W kit works best
The 400W kit includes an adjustable mounting bracket that suits single-panel installations without specialist tools or permanent fixings. The kit works across four common setups:
- South-facing balconies where a single panel fits within the railing or frame
- Ground-level patio setups using the adjustable bracket at the optimal tilt angle
- South-facing garden walls where the bracket can be fixed without roof access
- Rented properties where the panel needs to be removable at the end of a tenancy
How much could the 400W kit save you?
The 400W Plug-in Solar Kit generates up to 350kWh per year in the UK, depending on panel orientation, shading, and weather. At the current Ofgem electricity unit rate of 24.67p per kWh (April to June 2026), that offsets approximately £86 off your annual electricity bill.
What drives savings on the 400W kit
- Panel orientation: the 400W panel generates the most when south-facing at a 30 to 35-degree tilt. East or west-facing positions cut output by 15 to 20%.
- Daytime electricity use: the 400W kit generates during daylight, so households running appliances during the day save more. Running a dishwasher or washing machine on a delayed start during daylight hours increases self-consumption directly.
- Shading: Even partial shade on the panel cuts output. Positioning the panel clear of roof overhangs, trees, and neighbouring buildings makes a measurable difference to annual yield.
- Electricity tariff: savings scale with your unit rate. At 30p per kWh instead of 24.67p, the annual saving rises by approximately £9, bringing payback under 3 years.
Full UK Grid Compliance: G98 Certified
The TSUN 400W Plug-in Balcony Microinverter is fully G98 Compliant, making it legally recognised and certified for safe connection to the UK electrical grid. In simple terms, G98 is a standard technical regulation set by the UK Energy Networks Association for small-scale, domestic renewable energy systems that output under 3.68kW. Being G98 compliant means the microinverter has undergone strict type-testing to guarantee it won’t disrupt your local power network. Most importantly, it features an integrated automatic safety switch off. If there is ever a power cut in your neighbourhood, the inverter instantly disconnects within milliseconds to prevent sending live electricity back into the external wires, keeping utility engineers entirely safe while they work on the lines. With this certification, you can plug in your balcony system with complete peace of mind, knowing it meets all UK safety and legal infrastructure requirements.
Please note that while advance permission is not required, you are still legally required to register your plug-in solar system by submitting a simple G98 notification form to your local DNO within 30 days of commission.
Value of the 400W kit for renters and first-time buyers
For renters and those new to plug-in solar, the 400W kit is the lowest-risk entry point. The plug-in solar kit requires no structural modifications, no scaffolding, and no permanent commitment to a single property. The panel and bracket pack down for transport when you move, meaning the investment travels with you rather than staying with the building. The 400W output covers the majority of typical household baseload appliances simultaneously during daylight hours.
Installing the 400W Kit in the UK
Getting started with the 400W Plug-in Solar Kit is a straightforward DIY installation. Position and secure the solar panel using your chosen mounting system before connecting it to the microinverter with the supplied connectors. The included AC cable then plugs into a standard UK socket, allowing the electricity generated by the panel to support your home’s energy use. The system runs automatically once connected, with generation data available through the TSUN Smart App.
Start with 400W and Expand to 800W
The 400W Plug-in Solar Kit gives you the flexibility to start with a single panel and see how much electricity it generates for your home before expanding the system. If you later want to increase its output, a second compatible 400W kit can be daisy-chained to the original system, providing a combined microinverter output of up to 800W. This allows you to increase your solar generation without replacing your initial kit.
Under the new UK regulations, compliant plug-in solar microgenerators will be permitted to connect through a standard UK socket, provided their maximum rated AC output does not exceed 800W. Daisy-chaining two compatible 400W kits therefore allows you to reach the maximum permitted output while spreading the cost of the system over time. Both kits must be connected according to the manufacturer’s instructions, with the combined AC output remaining within the 800W limit.

FAQs:
What can a 400W plug-in solar kit actually power?
At peak output, the 400W kit covers a fridge-freezer drawing 150W, a broadband router at 12W, a 50-inch LED TV at 100W, and a phone charging at 18W simultaneously, totalling around 280W of combined draw. On a good summer day, generating for five to six hours, the kit produces approximately 2 to 2.4kWh, offsetting those baseload appliances for most of the daylight period.
Is the 400W kit the right starting point, or should I go straight to 800W?
The 400W kit suits renters, people with limited outdoor space, such as a single balcony panel position, and buyers who want to start small before committing to a larger system. The 800W kits cover more of your daytime baseload and have shorter payback periods relative to their output, but require more space and a higher upfront cost. If you have a south-facing balcony or patio with room for one panel, the 400W kit is the practical entry point.
Can renters use the 400W plug-in solar kit?
Yes. The kit requires no permanent fixings or structural changes, making it suitable for rented properties where tenants cannot install permanent systems. The adjustable mounting bracket removes without tools, and the panel packs down for transport at the end of a tenancy. Check your tenancy agreement before installation.
How long does the 400W kit take to pay back?
The 400W kit generates up to 350kWh per year based on a south-facing installation in the UK. At the current Ofgem electricity unit rate of 24.67p per kWh (April to June 2026), that offsets approximately £86 per year. Actual output varies by panel orientation, shading, and seasonal daylight hours.
Do I need an electrician to install the 400W kit?
The 400W plug-in solar kit is designed to be installed by the homeowner as a DIY install, and in most domestic situations a qualified electrician is not required. The system plugs directly into a standard UK socket without the need for rewiring or modifications to your consumer unit. However, you should be confident carrying out the installation and setting up the microinverter correctly. If you’re unsure about any part of the process, it’s always best to seek assistance from a competent person.

...When will I receive my order?
In most cases, a product on our website will give you an indication of the current stock availability, but shipping is not uniform for all products. We maintain fantastic relationships with all of our suppliers and we aim to get products to customers within 3 business days of the order being taken. This availability is based on information from our suppliers and from sales and supply patterns. The availability information given is a guide only and not a guarantee as there are external factors that we may not have control over.
Coronavirus Update – UK couriers and transport companies will not currently guarantee delivery times and we are seeing a slight delay in deliveries – please bear this in mind when ordering.
Specialist Couriers – Some items such as the larger portable power stations are sent by specialist courier as standard couriers will not accept them. These specialist couriers are very reliable but sometimes don’t have tracking or timed delivery.
Split deliveries – We sometimes need to send orders for more than one item by different courier networks (portable power stations for example) – so you may receive items at different times.
1500rpm machines or larger diesel gensets however are typically priced on application and all depend on the destination. We will be happy to quote on any large diesel generator and discuss your needs over the phone or via email.
Most orders placed before 12pm on a business day will be shipped from our suppliers on the same day provided the product is in stock. If you need to be certain an item is in stock and available, or if you need a lead time, it’s worth calling our sales team on 01329 722390. Pricing for extended shipping areas like Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and outlying Islands, Outer Hebrides, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Scilly Isles, and other postcodes not considered as UK mainland are calculated at the checkout or can be obtained by calling our offices.
Please note that the processing of a payment and acknowledgement email does not constitute a legally binding contract. In the case of mispricing, changes in stock quantity, or if we believe the machine will be misused, we reserve the right to cancel the order and provide a full refund.
Heavy Items
You will be contacted by phone after ordering a larger item to confirm a delivery date before your order is dispatched. Large or heavy items are dispatched through a pallet network, so if we can’t get in contact with you, we may be unable to send out your item on a next day delivery. Please be sure to include a working phone number with your order.
Heavy items will require the recipient to make arrangements to take delivery of the goods and may require the recipient to help the courier unload the item. For items that are delivered on a pallet the courier will leave the pallet as close to your door as possible.
1500rpm diesel generators will require forklift (or similar) offloading; if this is not available then we can arrange a Hiab offload at an additional price – please call us to discuss any delivery requirements.
