This plug-in solar kit pairs the 800W-rated EcoFlow STREAM Microinverter with two 150W Excel Power pop-up solar panels. The kit is fully compliant with UK G98 grid connection regulations and suits UK homeowners cutting bills under the recent plug-in solar rules, plus caravan, workshop and off-grid users.
What are plug-in solar panels?
Plug-in solar panels are compact solar kits made up of panels, a microinverter and a cable. The kit feeds electricity into your home’s existing circuit without a rooftop installation, or runs caravans and workshops off-grid via a portable power station. BS 7671 Amendment 4, published on 15 April 2026, allows UK plug-in solar up to 800W AC output.
How plug-in solar panels work
Plug-in solar panels generate DC electricity from sunlight, a microinverter converts that DC into 230V AC, and the AC power feeds your home’s existing circuit or a portable power station. Your appliances draw solar power first, and the grid fills the gap when demand exceeds what the panels produce.
Here is the 300W kit working step by step:
- Sunlight hits the panels: the two Excel Power 150W panels convert photons to DC electricity, with up to 22% cell efficiency per panel.
- The microinverter converts the signal: the EcoFlow STREAM takes the DC input (up to 65V) and outputs 230V AC at UK grid frequency, rated up to 800W.
- Your home uses solar first: the AC output feeds your consumer unit. Any appliance running during daylight draws from the solar supply before pulling from the grid.
- The grid fills the gap: if the panels produce 250W and your fridge and laptop need 400W, the grid supplies the remaining 150W. Your meter records only the grid portion.
- Anti-islanding keeps you compliant: the STREAM shuts off automatically during a power cut, protecting grid engineers working on the line. This is a G98 and G99 requirement for all UK grid-tied solar.
Running the kit off-grid
The same Excel Power panels work with most portable power stations via their MC4 connectors. Plug the panels into an EcoFlow, Jackery, Bluetti or Anker unit, and the kit charges the battery rather than feeding a home circuit. This setup suits caravans, campervans, garden workshops, allotments and off-grid cabins, where no DNO notification or electrician is needed because no grid connection exists.
How much could the 300W plug-in solar kit save you?
A 300W plug-in solar kit generates roughly 250 to 300 kWh per year in the UK, depending on panel position, shading and local weather. At a UK electricity price of 27p per kWh, that cuts £65 to £80 a year off your bill. The kit pays back in around 4 to 5 years, and the EcoFlow STREAM Microinverter carries a 10-year warranty, so the 300W plug-in solar kit keeps earning for at least 5 years after payback.
Value of the 300W plug-in solar kit for off-grid users
For caravan, workshop and off-grid setups, the 300W plug-in solar kit replaces petrol for a generator, campsite hook-up fees, or a second leisure battery. A weekend at a non-electric campsite saves £15 to £25 in hook-up fees. The 300W panel input recharges a 1kWh portable power station in 4 to 5 hours of good sun, which covers lighting, fridge and device charging for a full day.
Installing the 300W plug-in solar kit in the UK
A qualified electrician installs the 300W plug-in solar kit by hard-wiring the EcoFlow STREAM Microinverter into your consumer unit. The hard-wired route is BS 7671 compliant and the EcoFlow STREAM holds UK grid connection approval. Your electrician also files the G98 notification to your District Network Operator within 28 days of commissioning, as the system sits well within the 3.68kW G98 threshold for small-scale installations. For off-grid, caravan and workshop use, no electrician or DNO notification is needed: the Excel Power panels plug straight into a compatible portable power station via MC4 connectors.
FAQs: 300w Plug in Solar Kit
Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?
Yes, plug-in solar is legal in the UK. BS 7671 Amendment 4 was published on 15 April 2026 and allows sub-800W plug-in solar systems to connect to UK homes. The final government approval for 800W plug-and-socket kits is expected in July 2026. Technically until then, compliant installation is via a hard-wired connection to your consumer unit by a qualified electrician but plug-in solutions will be available before then ready for the rules change. The government has confirmed this will be legal by the summer of 2026.
Do I need an electrician to install the 300W plug-in solar kit?
Yes, for grid-tied use, a qualified electrician installs the 300W plug-in solar kit by hard-wiring the EcoFlow STREAM Microinverter into your consumer unit. For off-grid, caravan or workshop use, no electrician is needed: the Excel Power panels plug straight into a compatible portable power station.
Do I need to notify my DNO?
Yes, for grid-tied installation, your electrician files a G98 notification with your District Network Operator within 28 days of commissioning. G98 is a connect-and-notify process, not an approval process. Off-grid use needs no DNO notification because there is no grid connection.
Why is there an 800W cap on UK plug-in solar?
The 800W cap protects existing UK household wiring from overheating when solar generation feeds back into the circuit. 800W matches the German standard, which has covered over one million plug-in solar installations safely. The EcoFlow STREAM Microinverter in this kit is rated at 800W, sitting exactly at the UK cap.
Can I expand the 300W plug-in solar kit later?
Yes, the EcoFlow STREAM Microinverter is rated at 800W, so the 300W kit has 500W of panel input headroom. You can add more MC4-compatible solar panels later without replacing the microinverter. The STREAM has two MPPT channels, each accepting up to 600W, so panel expansion is straightforward.
Can I use the 300W plug-in solar kit on a caravan or campervan?
Yes, the Excel Power 150W pop-up panels connect to most portable power stations via MC4 connectors. For caravan, campervan, boat and off-grid use, the panels charge a compatible EcoFlow, Jackery, Bluetti or Anker power station. 300W of solar input recharges a 1kWh power station in 4 to 5 hours of good sun.

...When will I receive my order?
In most cases, a product on our website will give you an indication of the current stock availability, but shipping is not uniform for all products. We maintain fantastic relationships with all of our suppliers and we aim to get products to customers within 3 business days of the order being taken. This availability is based on information from our suppliers and from sales and supply patterns. The availability information given is a guide only and not a guarantee as there are external factors that we may not have control over.
Coronavirus Update – UK couriers and transport companies will not currently guarantee delivery times and we are seeing a slight delay in deliveries – please bear this in mind when ordering.
Specialist Couriers – Some items such as the larger portable power stations are sent by specialist courier as standard couriers will not accept them. These specialist couriers are very reliable but sometimes don’t have tracking or timed delivery.
Split deliveries – We sometimes need to send orders for more than one item by different courier networks (portable power stations for example) – so you may receive items at different times.
1500rpm machines or larger diesel gensets however are typically priced on application and all depend on the destination. We will be happy to quote on any large diesel generator and discuss your needs over the phone or via email.
Most orders placed before 12pm on a business day will be shipped from our suppliers on the same day provided the product is in stock. If you need to be certain an item is in stock and available, or if you need a lead time, it’s worth calling our sales team on 01329 722390. Pricing for extended shipping areas like Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and outlying Islands, Outer Hebrides, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Scilly Isles, and other postcodes not considered as UK mainland are calculated at the checkout or can be obtained by calling our offices.
Please note that the processing of a payment and acknowledgement email does not constitute a legally binding contract. In the case of mispricing, changes in stock quantity, or if we believe the machine will be misused, we reserve the right to cancel the order and provide a full refund.
Heavy Items
You will be contacted by phone after ordering a larger item to confirm a delivery date before your order is dispatched. Large or heavy items are dispatched through a pallet network, so if we can’t get in contact with you, we may be unable to send out your item on a next day delivery. Please be sure to include a working phone number with your order.
Heavy items will require the recipient to make arrangements to take delivery of the goods and may require the recipient to help the courier unload the item. For items that are delivered on a pallet the courier will leave the pallet as close to your door as possible.
1500rpm diesel generators will require forklift (or similar) offloading; if this is not available then we can arrange a Hiab offload at an additional price – please call us to discuss any delivery requirements.
